We are delighted to announce that after a successful trustee recruitment period, we have welcomed various new trustees to our board, to support in the development of our new 5 year strategy so we would like to officially welcome Allin to the Fares4Free family.
Can you please introduce yourself and explain a little bit about your professional background?
Born in South Africa, with formative years spent in both the UK and Spain, I currently serve as a Senior Research Scientist at Autodesk Research, specializing in materials science. My work encompasses a wide range of innovative applications of materials. Notably, I recently pioneered the exploration of mycelium as a carbon-negative building insulation solution. I hold an Engineering Doctorate in micro- and nanomaterials and technologies from the University of Surrey. My research there delved into the exciting world of laser-based metal 3D printing. Prior to my academic endeavours, I served as an Officer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, an experience that significantly shapes my work today.
Why did you want to join the Fares4Free board of trustees and what do you see yourself bringing to the charity?
Fares4Free's mission deeply resonates with my personal values and experiences, particularly its focus on aiding veterans' transition to civilian life. During my service, I frequently interacted with service personnel navigating their final months in the military due to medical, contractual or other circumstances. It was astounding to witness the profound impact of a simple conversation on the engagement and overall well-being of these individuals. I firmly believe that the sacrifices made by our armed forces warrant immense respect and ongoing support, which should not cease once their service contract ends. With my unique blend of military leadership and scientific research experience, I aim to amplify the charity's visibility and outreach through my technical expertise. My ultimate goal is to make a meaningful contribution to Fares4Free, enabling the organisation to expand its reach and positively impact more lives.
Why is it important to you to help The Armed Forces Community?
Supporting the Armed Forces Community is of paramount importance not only due to the enduring effects of their service but also the challenges they often encounter post-service. It's vital to provide support during their transition, and engaging in dialogue about their experiences can open new avenues of understanding. I've witnessed first-hand how such conversations can significantly enhance the mental well-being and overall quality of life of veterans. Although I no longer serve in the Army, I remain actively involved in supporting those who have served and those who will inevitably make the transition. In this way, I continue to be part of the unique establishment that is our armed forces.
