Jimmy Doherty will forever be remembered as a true hero...

We are saddened to announce the passing of Jimmy Doherty, a remarkable man whose spirit and resilience touched the lives of many until the age of 99.

Joining the Navy at just 17, Jimmy's journey through the Second World War alongside his father and brother is a story of bravery and familial bonds. His legacy continues through his grandson, who serves in the same army unit, echoing the pride and honour that runs through their family.

At Fares4Free, we were honoured to support Jimmy when he needed us most.  Jimmy, recognised as a hero of the Arctic convoys, stood proudly at Glasgow Central Station every year, reminding us all of the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who served. His presence at the unveiling of the memorial bench, embraced by hundreds, was a testament to a life dedicated to duty and valour.  Jimmy's heartfelt gratitude towards Fares4Free and John Symes in particular, our Glasgow and the West of Scotland Outreach Support Officer, highlights the profound connections formed through shared experiences and support. As Jimmy regularly said of John, "Anywhere I wanted to go, he has always been there."

As we mourn Jimmy's passing, we celebrate a life richly lived—a life that faced the trials of war while embracing the love of family, friendship, and community. Jimmy Doherty will forever be remembered as a true hero, a dedicated family man, and an inspiration to us all. We will carry forward his message: that we must never forget the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Rest in peace, Jimmy. Your legacy will endure in our hearts.
