Fares4Free Volunteer Outreach Support Driver Bill Brown and Outreach Support Driver Mike Brown, were on call this year during the world famous Edinburgh Festival, to support with the transportation for a comedy show featuring Armed Forces Veterans. 11 hilarious veterans took to the stage at Lady Haig's Poppy Factory situated at Logie Green Road in Edinburgh to tell comical stories about life, military service and dogs.
The Veterans Comedy Club is made up of a group of veterans who have completed the Royal British Legion’s ‘Recovery Through Comedy’ initiative. Through this programme, they created Operation Stand-Up, a comedy show that is guaranteed to make you laugh until your sides hurt.
The "Recovery Through Comedy" initiative is sought to build resilience and confidence in Armed Forces veterans who had faced serious adversity, such as being physically injured through their service, or as sufferers of PTSD.
This was achieved through a stand-up comedy training programme, where the veterans, under the tutelage of comedy superstar Janice Connolly (also known for her award-winning comedy character Mrs Barbara Nice), morphed their personal experiences into stand-up comedy routines.
Inspired by their personal transformation, the veterans founded The Veterans Comedy Club with the aim of producing more courses like the one that changed their lives.
The Fares4Free team assisted with transport to and from the venue for all 6 performances and also supported with transport to and from Edinburgh airport. All 6 of this years performances went down extremely well with lots of laughter and tears and we very much look forward to supporting the Club again next time on their return.
